North Carolina guard Joel Berry led four Tar Heels in double figures with 21 points while North Carolina pounded Duke on the boards in taking an 82-78 win over their rivals in Chapel Hill On Thursday night.
Duke led by as many as 12 in the first half as they pounded the paint early and used the inside play of Wendell Carter, Jr. and Marvin Bagley, III, to build the lead at 40-28 lead with a Carter dunk and subsequent three with 6:15 remaining. Berry and Luke Maye combined for 12 of the Heels’ last 15 points as they cut Duke’s margin to 49-45 at the break.
From there, Carolina started quick in the second half as the Tar Heels started on a 16-2 run to take a 61-51 lead with 15:53 to play. Kenny Williams and Maye once again were keys as Williams, who made four triples in the first half, hit another and then made a layup in the run.
The Blue Devils would get as close as three, but North Carolina had the answer as the Tar Heels finished with a dominating 20-11 margin on the offensive glass while finishing overall at a 44-38 margin.
It was the 247th meeting in the rivalry where in the last 101 games, North Carolina has a 51-50 lead and has out scored Duke by two points in those 101 games.
