As the St. John’s Red Storm picked off a third win in a row over the weekend in an 86-78 win over Marquette, sophomore guard Shamorie Ponds once again came up huge game as his 44 points sparked the Red Storm to the win.

Ponds averaged 35 points for the week as he netted 26 in last week’s victory at No. 1 Villanova.  For those performances, he won his second Big East Player of the Week in a row and was named the national player of the week by Andy Katz on NCAA.com.

The victory over the Wildcats ended Villanova’s 54-game winning streak against unranked opponents and was also the first time the Johnnies had defeated a No. 1 team since they knocked off Georgetown in 1985.

Ponds’ 44 at home vs. the Golden Eagles was the fourth highest scoring total in SJU history.  He scored 27 of his 44 points in the second half and made 16-of-23 shots from the field and went 4-of-7 from behind the arc.

Ponds and the Red Storm are back in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Chicago to face DePaul.
